About the Authors

Jenny Craig became involved in the weight-loss industry in 1959 after facing a challenging weight problem of her own. She and her husband, Sid, run Jenny Craig International, a company they founded in 1983 and which now has over six hundred weight-loss centers throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. She is a member of the board of the International Women's Forum and of the board of trustees of the University of California at San Diego. She and her husband reside in Del Mar, California, and have five children between them, four of whom own Jenny Craig Franchises.

Brenda L. Wolfe first became interested in the field of obesity while earning her psychology degree from McGill University. She went on to specialize in weight management during graduate studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology. She is currently director of research for Jenny Craig, Inc., and she happily balances marriage and child-rearing with her career by living in Moderation Mountain.

From Kirkus Reviews:
The proprietor of an international chain of weight-loss centers puts her program in print with this all-round advisory on taking and keeping it off. In context, it's nongimmicky, nontechnical in the extreme, moderate in demands, and sensible- -though that means that the message is also all-too familiar: Set goals that are reasonable and specific; don't diet without exercise; expect and learn from lapses; satisfy your taste with herbs and spices, not fat and sugar; be firm with saboteurs; and so on. In format, though, it is, if not gimmicky, at least busy. Chapters are ``modules''; food groups, following the American Diabetic Association model, are ``exchanges''; and the book is full of menu charts, assignments, self-analysis checklists, quizzes, lists, boxes, and ``Thank you, Jenny Craig'' letters from happy losers. Then there are recipes. None of this can substitute for group pressure or the commitment that comes from paying a boodle and signing up for scheduled sessions--but that could be said of any diet book. This one surely rates a hearing. (Line drawings throughout.) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
From Library Journal:
The founder of the successful Jenny Craig Weight-Loss Centers outlines the weight management system she developed to help clients lose weight, keep it off, and live a healthy, comfortable lifestyle. This safe, sensible program uses food exchanges instead of calories and emphasizes good nutrition, moderate exercise, and behavior modification. In addition, it is easily personalized to fit different weight-loss needs and includes numerous recipes and snack suggestions. Unfortunately, for librarians, though, the book is designed with many fill-ins to involve its readers in a variety of exercises that require them to answer questionnaires, write their thoughts, record their goals and progress, outline their strategies, etc. Although this format is undoubtedly helpful to the reader, it limits the book's shelf life in most libraries.-- Linda Chopra, Cleveland Hts.
