A spirited adaptation of a traditional tale about a feisty, good-natured old woman's run-in with the fabled bogey beast

From Publishers Weekly:

This highly readable retelling of a traditional English folktale stars kind-hearted Maggie Mab, "poor as the sound of a tin bell," who lives alone. After discovering an iron pot filled with gold coins that is thrice magically transformed, she at last finds a bogey beast who takes her for the ride of her life. Maggie's uncomplaining, generous spirit saves her in the end; rather than be tricked, she earns three gold coins with which she buys provisions for herself and for her neighbors--one coin remains to remind her always of her adventure. Carey's language, with its occasional appropriately inverted sentence constructions, is carefully attuned to the world of fairy tales, as is her collaborator's brush. With obvious influence by such illustrators as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, first-timer Westerman contributes fanciful pictures to Carey's fey prose. In a palette of rich blues, greens and violets, she masterfully draws frolicsome sprites, droll faces and ebullient action. A graceful work of fantasy. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-4-- Good-hearted Maggie Mab outwits the trickster Bogey Beast in this retelling of an English folktale. The story is told with country charm, in a style befitting its simple, kind heroine. This woman deals uncomplainingly with her worsening lot as the beast plays tricks on her, changing a pot of gold into silver, then iron, and then stone. With each change, the woman is happy. Finally, the Beast gives her a ride through the sky, but she still does not complain. For her good nature, she earns a real reward of money, which she characteristically shares with her neighbors. Because of the vivid colloquial language and the simple story line, this is a good choice for storytelling. The illustrations are detailed and dainty with cool, transparent washes of blue and green colors adding to the mood of nonthreatening fantasy. --Yvonne Frey, Peoria Public Schools, IL
