Gr. 6^-10. The French Revolution is a particularly gruesome, fascinating era, fraught with violence, politics, and intrigue. Stewart doesn't mince words about the cruelty and violence, and her account of life then will draw teens in. Once hooked, however, readers will stay to learn about the politics and their ramifications because of Stewart's clear prose and unerring ability to capture the fascinating scenario. Her research is well documented; an annotated bibliography will allow readers to decide their own depth of research, and excerpts from a variety of sources further expand and enhance the primary text. The book's design itself is noteworthy, with art from throughout the era depicting both the opulence and the terror. Divisions within chapters allow for easy research, yet are not distracting for those who wish to read straight through.
