Gr 7-10In the Middle Ages, the Vikings came out of Scandinavia in their longships and changed the face of Europe. Although they were greatly feared by the Europeans for their ruthlessness and use of force, many of them did settle in the countries they invaded and assimilated into the cultures, eventually even adopting Christianity. Their language and political system influenced many of these European countries. The sequence of this book is topical rather than chronological, covering Viking Ships, Raiding, and Warfare; everyday life; Farmers, Builders, and Traders; language, art, and poetry; and other subjects. Some of the language is difficult and not well defined. For example, Streissguth uses the word pagan throughout but never really explains it, although he does devote a later chapter to Viking religion. While its unlikely that students will read this title cover to cover, the black-and-white illustrations and reproductions, sidebars, chronology, and index make it a useful volume for research.Lynn W.
