9781560068556: Discovering Mythology - Quests and Journeys

Among the greatest literary masterpieces and enduring myths of world culture are the exciting, danger-filled, and often enlightening heroic quests and journeys of epic adventure. This volume's rich, well-documented text covers such favorites as Gilgamesh's search for immortality, Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece, Odysseus's efforts to reach his home, the Arthurian quest for the Holy Grail, and the inward journeys of Native American vision quests.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 7 Up-In these books, Nardo examines the themes as they appear in the myths of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, Celts, Chinese, Norse, and Native Americans. Each chapter opens with an introduction to the culture and places the tales in context. The author makes interesting historical and comparative points about the stories and the effects of religion on them. The selections are not literary retellings; rather, they are uninspired reworkings of the myths. Sidebars convey related cultural or historical activities and events. While the books are a mixed bag of accurate information and a truly diverse assortment of black-and-white illustrations, they are rather dry and marred by a few details, such as the unfortunate choice of a mosaic featuring a nude Greek wrestler tackling a humanistic bull for the cover of Heroes. Women are not seen as heroes in either book; in fact, most female characters mentioned are vengeful goddesses or women who helped bring about evil. It is difficult to tell who the intended audience is for these series entries; libraries may be hard-pressed to find a niche for them.
