Kindergarten-Grade 4-This program, designed to teach children some Spanish, uses sound effects, such as a cat's "meow," followed by the Spanish word for cat, "el gato," spoken twice. The accompanying activity book allows kids to identify words, pictures, and sounds. Categories of words include animals, sports, household objects, nature, numbers, garden, places, vehicles, and more. Since only nouns and verbs are introduced, youngsters will not learn to speak Spanish since no complete phrases are given. No English is used, and although some sounds of things are easily recognizable, others are not at all. Unless children can recognized the sound preceding the Spanish word, they may not understand the word they are repeating. The sound quality of the cassette is tinny, unclear, and difficult to listen to and there is more time taken on the tape for the repetition of the sounds than on the clear and slow repetition of the Spanish words by the narrator. The activity book is illustrated in a very busy, cartoon-like style, and there are no instructions on proper pronunciation of any of the words. Children must listen to the tape at the same time they are using the activity book. This program does not work at all as a tool for learning a foreign language, and children will lose interest quickly.
