About the Author

Scott R. Avetta is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, with an undergraduate degree in business management from Maryville University. His work has been published in many books, including St. Louis Impressions, Illinois Impressions, Missouri Simply Beautiful, The Ozarks, St. Louis Seen and Unseen, St. Louis For the Record, Last Stand of the Tallgrass Prairie, Lewis and Clark’s Journey Across Missouri, and America’s National Parks.

Charles Gurche is one of the United States’ foremost nature and landscape photographers. His work has appeared in numerous calendars and magazines, including Audubon, National Geographic, Natural History and Outside, and in numerous books on the Midwest and Northwest. He has photographed for Kodak, the Sierra Club, Smithsonian Books, and the National Park Service. Gurche has won awards from the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Ruth Hoyt is a charter member of the North American Nature Photography Association and serves on its Education Committee as Scholarship Student Program Coordinator. She has led workshops for Kodak and the national parks system. Her credits include National Geographic Books, The Nature Conservancy, Missouri Wildlife, Michigan Living, St. Louis: For the Record, and many others.
