Corcoran, a Salt Lake City typesetter and freelance writer, has written a thoroughly researched, detailed, historic guide to Park City, Utah. Three walking tours-Main Street, Old Town, and Lower Town and Ski Resort-and three bicycling tours-Snyderville Basin, Empire Canyon, and Telemark Hollow-give a flavor for the town and area. As Corcoran writes in his introduction, "Park City is in Utah but not of it." Its present and past show a great gap between the staunch Mormonism of most of the rest of the state and the more wide-open and liberal environment that is closer in style to Aspen or Lake Tahoe. The tours go into great detail about each building (59 buildings are featured in the one-mile Main St. chapter alone). Corcoran presents the architecture, history, sociology, and politics of a wonderful destination resort. His guide will still be very useful in 2002, when the region hosts the Winter Olympics.
