Since many Westerners have only begun to appreciate Africa's artistic past, the danger exists that they will overlook or undervalue the renaissance taking place today in the continent's visual arts. Kennedy (ethnic studies, California Coll. of Arts and Crafts) offers a plain, truthful introduction to Africa's contemporary art. She reveals that Africans are aware of their artistic impact on Europe; many have studied abroad, and they know what the rest of the world is doing. Nevertheless, most remain truly African, syncretizing their culture with Europe's rather than being subsumed by it. Like contemporary artists the world over, they simply wish to be taken seriously. An excellent companion to Susan Vogel & others' Africa Explores: 20th Century African Art ( LJ 10/1/91).
