Synopsis
The title refers not to the southern U.S., but to the southern hemisphere and tropical lowland forests, where more than 200 species (some characterized as living fossils) live and thrive. Twelve contributions provide survey the present state of knowledge concerning the history and ecology of the southern conifers, and emphasize their importance in understanding the evolution and ecological dynamics of southern vegetation. About the Author
Associate Professor Neil J. Enright is Reader in Geography at the University of Melbourne, and has worked and taught in Canada and New Zealand. Professor Robert S. Hill is Head of the Department of Plant Science at the University of Tasmania.
