Grandfather and Roo, a remarkable dog with a vivid imagination, set off from England to America on an exciting expedition to the Wild, Wild West.
The intrepid travelers are in search of Roo’s grandfather, rumored to be living among cowboys following a successful movie career. Grandfather and Roo land in Hollywood, and after a movie studio tour, they embark on a bus trip that ends abruptly with the two of them dumped by the side of the road. The pair hitchhike through the Grand Canyon before finally reaching One Horse Town, which has been overrun by a gang of lawless horses. After a narrow nighttime escape and chilly nights camping in caves, Roo is joyfully reunited with Old Blue, his grandfather.
Cleverly told through Grandfather’s affectionate letters written to a grandchild back home, The Last Cowboys is another hilarious, original adventure featuring this immensely charming twosome. Horse’s winsome pen-and-ink illustrations perfectly complement this fanciful tale that will delight young and old alike.

Advertising campaigns convincingly portray Delta Air Lines employees as one big happily family who will certainly get us there with care. Sidney Davis examines their image with precision and skepticism. His survey among travel agencies and the in-depth focus on the airline's lack of a comprehensive long-range strategy conclude that Delta's performance lags far behind its image.
Grade 2–4—An unnamed British man takes his rambunctious dog to America to find her long-lost grandfather. Roo claims that he was in movies and later belonged to a cowboy, so the man arranges to visit Hollywood and a place called Cowboy Town in hopes of finding the pooch. Instead, as his letters home to his grandchild relate, the trip is a string of disasters. First Roo misbehaves on the plane, and then the travelers discover that the Greyhound bus tour they booked is actually a ride on a bus full of greyhounds on their way to a race. Nevertheless, the two continue their search at sites such as Rabbit World (an amusement park) and the Grand Canyon. Roo's antics escalate at each stop, culminating with her being named sheriff of One Horse Town. Humorous black-and-white line drawings add dimension to the characters the pair meet along the way. A map helps readers follow the journey, though not all of the sites mentioned in the story are included. While adults may tire of the Old West stereotypes, young chapter-book readers are unlikely to notice.—Jackie Partch, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
