In America, most comics tell superhero or other genre fiction adventures, but in Europe, the medium embraces more variety. This Swiss example is about a British novelist who travels in the 1920s to an Alpine village to work on a novel and learn about a much older brother, a musician, whom he barely knows. By story's end, he has discovered not only the truth about his brother's concert career but also romance. The tale is rather low key, especially compared to the slam-bang action or raucous humor of most domestic comics, but its execution makes it compelling. Writer Cosey is well served by artist Cosey, whose skillful line work, imaginative layouts, intelligent compositions, and adroit placement of large, solid black masses and white negative space rivet the eye.
