Baltimore has a great hero. He’s always there just when he’s needed to thwart crime! This marvel is Elephant Man. Yes, none other than the deformed and hideous man himself! But such power and the adulation that follows it begets much jealousy. Before you know it, one of the city’s best known TV anchors, handsome’ Dick Denton and another hideous being fused by some radioactive accident: the Priest, The Rabbi and The Duck, come together to seek his demise and ridicule him in public! Will Elephant Man overcome this new challenge? Another hilariously silly exercise in grotesquery, spoofing superheroes, from the acclaimed brilliant artist of Vatican Hustle.

Burne Hogarth (Author) :From Booklist:
Superhero parodies don’t get any loopier than this: A hideously deformed costumed crimefighter, lacking any paranormal powers or other qualifications, nonetheless becomes the beloved guardian of a beleaguered city. Just as Superman defends Metropolis and Batman Gotham City, Baltimore is under the watchful eye of this pachydermesque protector, who faces off against such equally ineffectual foes as the three-headed Priest, Rabbi, and Duck, a “walking punchline” fused together by a scientific accident. In civilian life, Elephant Man is ace reporter John Merriek—a nod to his fellow neurofibromatosis-sufferer—but despite his massive disfigurement, newsgal Tracie Bombasso and his other coworkers somehow fail to recognize the secret identity behind his glasses and fedora. It’s entertainingly silly, but once the point is made, a sense of repetition sets in; the spoof would be more effective—and seem more authentic—in 20-page comic-book installments. But even when the satire grows overly broad, the story is carried by Houston’s skillfully exaggerated artwork, which deftly mines every bit of the tale’s grotesque humor. The overall result is engaging if inconsequential—much like the old-school comics it mocks. --Gordon Flagg
