Reviews

After describing the Gulf of Mexico as the American Mediterranean, Gore outlines its history, demography, geology, oceanography, biology, ecology, and economic resources. Drawing on his expertise as a marine scientist, Gore aims to educate and inform on the effects of environmental pollution and overdevelopment on the marine and coastal ecosystems of the Gulf area. Written for the layperson, the book includes numerous maps, charts, and photos. An eight-page bibliography, arranged by subject, notes whether each book is general or technical in nature. An index and a 24-page glossary enhance the volume's reference value. A unique feature, "Ponderables for Our Future," contains lists of facts and figures on specific topics in the text. More detailed than Bern Keating's The Gulf of Mexico (1972. o.p.) but less technical than Joseph C. Britton's Shore Ecology of the Gulf of Mexico (Univ. of Texas, 1989), this work is appropriate for public and academic libraries.
