Grade 3-5-There is a lot of good information about some familiar and less well known African animals buried in this disappointing offering. Unfortunately, the text is choppy, with short sentences that do not flow well. The book seems to begin mid-thought, as though it is just a portion of Zingg's safari journal. It is several pages before readers learn that they are traveling in the Okavango River Delta, and it is only on the final two pages that they discover they are in Botswana. There are no maps, nor is there a geographic marker of any sort. The author is clearly far more interested in describing animals he encountered than in offering readers any sense of place, and the text is poorly organized. The full-color photographs are adequate, but there aren't enough of them to break up the dry, bland text. Children would do better consulting an encyclopedia or an appropriate volume of the Encyclopedia of the Animal World Series (Facts on File).
