Sam overcomes his anxieties by confessing them to his stuffed bear, who kindly agrees to take over the job of worrying about things at night.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Sam worries about things happening, such as library books getting lost, an earthquake at school, or a volcano erupting under his house. His mother assures him that such occurrences are highly unlikely, but Sam is convinced that there's always a first time. He confers with his teddy bear, who agrees there's plenty to fret about. The two strike a deal: the bear will worry about everything all night and Sam can take the day shift. Those children who believe that stuffed animals somehow guard them at night will be reassured by Sam's solution. Riches's glowing watercolors are friendly when they need to be and appropriately scary when Sam's anxieties are pictured. A good addition to booklists concerned with nighttime fears. --Susan Hepler, Alexandria City Public Schools, VA
