Reviews

Grade 3-8-- Even those who don't look forward to opening day will be caught up in the excitement of the national pastime as chronicled in this varied volume. Morrison celebrates its myriad pleasures from spring training to the thrill of being at bat and winning, or disappointingly missing a catch. Thayer's ``Casey at the Bat'' is joined by poetry by such authors as X. J. Kennedy, Marianne Moore, Morrison herself, and many others. Although the selections are not new, their compilation offers readers a complete view of the sport. The anticipation of the teams coming up north can be felt in Keyes's ``The Yankees,'' while the sounds and excitement of the game are heard in Merriam's ``End of Winter'' and Swenson's ``Analysis of Baseball.'' A girl saves the day for a little league team in ``The New Kid.'' There are poems about early teams, historic scuffles, and greats from the past. Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron's accomplishments live on in two selections as does the racism they endured. The book's format underscores and enhances the messages. Selections are framed in brown-and-white pinstripes, and Cieslawski's lively monochromatic and full-color illustrations team up perfectly with the text. Notes offer historical information. An enjoyable and absorbing anthology that's a must for any collection. --Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ
