Most business professionals understand the value of connecting their top leaders to other established and high potential leaders in the organization. Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), a $6.5 billion medical technology company with 28,000 employees, believes its leaders should make this vital connection in a unique and highly effective way – through teaching. Leaders as Teachers chronicles BD’s 8-year journey to create and deploy a leadership development program that relies on all top leaders (even its CEO) to train other leaders. The initiative, led by author Edward Betof , BD’s vice president and chief learning officer, has produced dramatic results, including measurable business results, a stronger and more supportive learning environment, improved communications and strengthened organizational culture, a more adaptive and change-receptive leadership team, and direct cost savings for the organization.

In addition to its compelling story of change, Leaders as Teachers offers a roadmap for other organization wishing to implement and benefit from BD’s experience. This complete roadmap includes detailed advice on how to introduce the leaders as teachers program and advice on how to overcome resistance to change; how to select, recruit, and train new leaders for the program; and how to evaluate the effectiveness of a fully functioning program. The book provides all the necessary tools, including detailed plans, worksheets, exercises, complete sample training outlines, and extra materials that speed the transition to leaders as teachers and take full advantage of BD’s extensive experience. Dozens of sidebars throughout the book present the participation experiences of BD’s leaders at all levels, frequently asked questions (FAQs), and personal testimonials of those who have benefited from participation in the leaders as teacher program.

About the Author:

Edward Betof Ed.D., is Senior Fellow and Academic Director of the Executive Program in Work Place Learning Leadership at The Wharton School and Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania. He formally served as Vice President and Chief Learning Officer at Becton, Dickinson and Company and has also served as member of the ASTD Board of Directors (2004-06) and Chair of the Executive Committee, Conference Board’s Council Learning, Development and Organizational Performance (2005-2007).

Review:

There is a gigantic difference between great individual leaders and leaders who build great companies. It's one thing to make brilliant individual decisions, yet entirely another to cultivate a brilliant culture composed of wave upon wave of leaders who then teach generation upon generation of new leaders. When leaders master the art of teaching, they've laid a powerful foundation for an enduring great company. --Jim Collins, Author, Good to Great, Co-Author, Built to Last

Ed Betof captures the key to winning in these turbulent times, namely, leaders developing leaders at all levels. The BD story is a powerful benchmark showing how a CEO and team with a clear Teachable Point of View(tm) and a commitment to teach and have leaders teach at all levels both drives performance and develops a leadership pipeline for the future. --Noel Tichy, Professor, University of Michigan, Author, JUDGEMENT: How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls

In uncertain times, leaders MUST be teachers! Ed Betof has crafted a critically important call to action for leaders to take an active teaching role, in person and digitally, with their colleagues. --Elliott Masie, Chair, The Learning CONSORTIUM

Book Description American Society for Training Development, United States, 2009. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Leaders learn and acquire experience from many places, but ask successful leaders how they became successful; it s usually because they learned from other great leaders. The idea of using an organization s leaders as the keystone of a successful learning strategy might seem obvious, but few groups employ this strategy because they don t know how. It s not something that just happens - unless you re very lucky. So why wouldn t you use experienced leaders to inspire, mentor, coach, and develop other talented leaders to their full potential? Here s the journey of Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), which created and deployed a leadership development program that relies on all its top leaders (even the CEO) to train other leaders. From BD s success of improved business results, improved communications and strengthened organizational culture, your organization, too, can learn how to build and implement this vital program.
