Grade 7-12-A well-organized overview of the effects of diet on health. Topics include myths about nutrition and fitness, eating to enhance physical and mental performance, and how food can alter one's moods and emotions. Salter approaches his subject seriously and presents straightforward, clear information that will promote fitness through good nutrition. He addresses the dangers of both deficiencies and overdoses of nutrients, and offers specific advice on supplements, vitamins, and the best things to eat before an athletic event or exam. He doesn't shy away from fairly technical terms, but appends a good glossary. Few source notes are cited, but addresses of sports organizations, a paltry list of further reading, and a helpful index are included. Overall, this book is a practical guide for students to follow and to use for reports. Greater depth and specifics in the area of sports nutrition are found in Robert Haas's Eat to Win (Dutton, 1985) and Steve Wooten's Nutrition for Sport (Facts on File, 1988).
