From School Library Journal:

Grade 6-12-Drawing from current books, professional journals, and periodicals, Yancey tells the stories of 10 recent medical mysteries. Several of the topics included here have individual titles devoted to them; students researching such subjects as AIDS and Lyme Disease will do better with the Silversteins' AIDS (Enslow, 1991) or Elaine Landau's Lyme Disease (Watts, 1990). Other chapters describe incidents of bat rabies; plague; and pesticide, food, and lead poisoning. The return of tuberculosis is discussed, as is a strange, unsolved disease that kills Southeast Asian men quite suddenly. The text involves readers in what happened to the victims, the progress of the investigations, and their results. A few average-quality, black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout. This title, which shows the continuing progress of medical research, is a welcome companion to books like Nathan Aaseng's The Disease Fighters (Lerner, 1987), which discusses conquering diseases such as diabetes, yellow fever, and polio.

From Booklist:

Gr. 7-12. Yancey retraces the sometimes arduous steps of federal health investigators, state and county health department workers, and family doctors who attempt to unravel a variety of medical enigmas. In a stimulating, unsensational narrative reminiscent of a human interest news story, she portrays the thoroughness and determination exhibited by health officials as they track down clues to deadly mysteries ranging from the AIDS virus and Lyme disease to pesticide poisoning resulting from a pair of blue jeans. The use of parenthetical definitions for terms already explained in the glossary is somewhat intrusive, but that's a minor complaint in a title that might appeal to browsers as well as serve as an additional resource for report writers. The bibliography contains many titles that may already be in larger collections, such as Nathan Aaseng's The Disease Fighters (1987); black-and-white photographs illustrate the text; and a glossary and notes are appended.
