Gr 3-6-Well-written, thoughtful texts detail all aspects of life with a pet bird or dog. Discussions include the history of domestication; choosing a pet; feeding, care, and training; and understanding the animal's psychological needs. While the content is admirable, the soft-hued illustrations of anthropomorphized creatures making cutesy comments and acting like humans are a distraction and at times inappropriate.-Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA
