Engaging biographical sketches of 65 current nonfiction authors (some of them award winners) are accompanied by selective, annotated bibliographies for further reading. In addition, author photos and an author message to students enhance the experience. Biographies outline the childhoods of the authors, how they became writers, and how they go about their work. From Booklist:

Increasingly, nonfiction books are being published for elementary students. Particularly since youngsters enjoy learning about writers, a reference book specializing in these authors is indeed welcome. This volume is the second in the publisher's Popular Authors series, following The 100 Most Popular Young Adult Authors [RBB O 1 96].

The three compilers, who have worked with elementary-school students, drew from their experience to select the writers. They limited coverage to living writers with books currently in print in English. Poets, playwrights, and writers best known for retelling folktales were excluded. Among the 65 who are represented are Kathryn Lasky, Patricia and Fredrick L. McKissack, Milton Meltzer, Jim Murphy, and George Sullivan. The selection is generally solid, although the lack of an entry on Russell Freedman, author of the Newbery Award^-winning Lincoln: A Photobiography, is puzzling.

According to the introduction, the book is meant for two different audiences--children, and teachers and education students. For the adult audience, each entry includes a one-to-two-page biographical profile and a selected annotated bibliography of the writer's works. For children, each author has contributed a "message to students," which in some cases consists of just a sentence or two. Students should also be interested in the photographs that accompany each entry. Two indexes follow the main section: an alphabetical author-title index and a subject index.

Almost all the writers are also covered in volumes of Gale's Something about the Author, and in greater detail. Popular Nonfiction Authors for Children might be useful in libraries that do not subscribe to the Gale series, or that want to supplement Something about the Author with a convenient one-volume alternative on a select group of writers.
