Paul Hashagen has been fighting fires since 1976. In 2003 he retired from the FDNY after twenty-five years of service, with twenty of those years in Rescue Company 1 in Manhattan. He is a former chief of the Freeport Fire Department and is still an active member of Truck Company 1. Paul, a contributing editor at Firehouse Magazine, has written several books on the history of the fire service.
