Synopsis
The United State Marine Corps Aviation Squadron is rich in history, contributing significantly to the downfall of the Japanese troops in World War II. The squadron was activated as VMF-112 on 1 March 1942 at San Diego, California, under the command of Major Wilfred J. Huffman. A constant stream of groups and squadrons were dispatched to the South Pacific, including MAG-11, of which VMF-112 was a component. In recognition of its valor and its contributions to victory during its service on Guadalcanal, VMF-112 was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. During its second combat tour beginning in December 1944, the squadron was responsible for helping to destroy over 100 Japanese aircraft in aerial combat.
