Synopsis
The first volume of a two-volume set is an architectural history of the early church set within a wider cultural context of developing social and religious practices within the emerging Christian movement. Before Christianity became the official Roman religion, devotees met in each others' homes. With the advent of the basilica, the church became institutionalized. White (classics and religious studies, U. of Texas-Austin) documents this transition and compares it to comparable patterns of architectural adaptation among other religious groups, especially Diaspora Judaism and the Roman Mithras cult.
