9781563381942: Liturgical Spirituality

Well-known liturgical scholar and writer Philip Pfatteicher turns his attention in this book to "liturgical spirituality" as distinct from "liturgy and spirituality" which assumes two essentially separate disciplines. "Liturgical spirituality" is a holistic concept, bringing together both liturgy and spirituality with reference to the interior life of the spirit that is formed and nurtured by the churches liturgy. Pfatteicher acknowledges that there are other kinds of spirituality that appear to flourish apart from and in addition to the liturgy: for example, the spirituality of the desert ascetics of the early centuries of christianity, the devotion of the Religious Society of Friends, and many forms of meditation and spiritual discipline such as the Spiritual Exercise of Ignatius Loyola. The focus of the present volume, however, is on the spiritual life as formed by the liturgy, the ordered form of Christian worship, East and West, Catholic and Protestant. In addition to the form of worship one might experience on a Sunday morning, Liturgical Spirituality guides the reader through and into the experience of daily prayer, the Easter Vigil, the Church Year, the Eucharist, hymns and music, Baptism, and even church architecture as "hallowing space" In 1955 Louis Bouyer published an admirable study entitled Liturgical Piety, written before Vatican II and its far-reaching reforms that fundamentally changed the entire Western church. Philip Pfatteicher has now taken up the challenge of expanding upon Bouyer with a current and invigorating study not of "liturgical piety" but of "liturgical spirituality". Philip Phatteicher is Professor of English at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania, a frequent writer and lecturer on liturgical issues, and author of A Dictionary of Liturgical Terms and The School of the Church: Worship and Christian Formation, both published by Trinity Press.

Review:

"Liturgical Spirituality by Philip Pfatteicher claims that the experience provided by the liturgy develops people in their Christian faith and life. It is not doctrine, not discipline, but praying through the liturgy each Sunday, or each day of the church year, that does it, he claims, and his in-depth discussion of how it works is impressive." —The Pennsylvania Episcopalian (The Pennsylvania Episcopalian)

"Pfatteicher takes as his inspiration Liturgical Piety, the famous 1955 book by Louis Bouyer, but he writes a book for today." — Praying Magazine, September/October 1997

"Working with this book could change the life of a congregation. (Pfatteicher's) fresh insights make this book valuable for those beginning their liturgical education and equally those with years of experience." —Ellen F. Davis, Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia

"The author, well known for his works on the Lutheran liturgy, is a professor of English and brings to his work a broad and deep knowledge of literature as well as liturgy. Robert Wilken, in a quotation on the back cover, describes it as ‘awakening the heart and the soul as it informs the mind.' He is right...Pfatteicher explores the very core of Christian worship, its proclamation in Word and Sacrament of the paschal mystery of the dying and rising again of Jesus Christ and our participation as a people and as individuals therein. He does this with learning, love and grace. I found it an inspiring book, and so will most Christians who worship in the great liturgical tradition of the Catholic Church." —Leonel L. Mitchell, reviewing for OPEN, Summer 1997 (Open)

"The book is to be admired for what it does: It explicates the principal symbols of Christian worship. In this Pfatteicher has something to teach us. It is also enjoyable to read: Pfatteicher is a felicitous writer with a gift for mining the tradition of English poetry as a way of pursuing the depths of meaning in Christian symbols. The book serves well as a contemporary introduction to liturgical spirituality and could serve as a companion in an introductory worship course with seminarians." —E. Byron Anderson, Christian Theological Seminary, reviewing for Encounter, Fall 1997 (E. Byron Anderson Encounter)

"Trinity Press has recently released a fine book entitled Liturgical Spirituality by Philip H. Pfatteicher. This book presents a holistic concept that brings together the interior life of the spirit with the nurturing of the church's liturgy. It also guides the reader through and into the experience of daily prayer, the Easter Vigil, the Church Year, the Eucharist, hymns and music, and Baptism." —Sacred Music News & Review, November/December 1997

"...Pfatteicher presents his material in a straight-forward and direct style which makes the book manageable for untrained clergy and lay people. But the numerous allusions to and citations of biblical, liturgical, and literary texts will also satisfy the scholar... many allusions to and citations of the works of great poets, preachers, and mystical writers... one may say about this book what cannot always be said about a serious work: it is a delight." —Frank C. Senn, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Evanston, IL, reviewing for Worship, March 1998 (Frank C. Senn Worship)

"Pfatteicher's reflections display a thoroughness and depth of insight which are the fruits of his long and distinguished career as a Lutheran liturgical scholar and pastor. At the same time, he writes with a sensitivity to imagination, narrative, and symbol and with a lyricism of expression which are perhaps more reflective of his other career as a professor English... More devotional than scholarly, this book could certainly deepen and enrich the worship and faith life of any liturgically minded Christian, whether beginner or seasoned expert... Readers may expect epiphanies in their own liturgical spirituality. Enriched by Pfatteicher's vision, they may ‘return to the Lord's Supper and know it for the first time.'" — Daniel M. Ruff, S.J., St. Mary's University, Baltimore, reviewing for Theological Studies (Daniel M. Ruff, S.J. Theological Studies)

"...exhibits a breadth of knowledge of the Christian liturgical tradition. As liturgical scholar and professor of English, he possesses a unique perspective that enables him to engage the reader's imagination by masterfully interweaving literary references throughout the text. In this way, the book provides a model for interpreting the liturgy, not only through ritual texts and behavior, but also through human experience." — Judith M. Kubicki, C.S.S.F, Christ the King Seminary, reviewing for New Theology Review, February 1999 (Judith M. Kubicki, C.S.S.F New Theology Review)

"Clearly cuts across denominational lines to the larger dimension of Christian spirituality, and offers insight which may be fruitful in the lives of Christians in all liturgical traditions." — The Rev. Louis Weil, Berkeley, California, reviewing for The Living Church, April 18, 1999 (The Rev. Louis Weil The Living Church)
