Blue True Dream of Sky grabs the reader right from the beginning. Written in present tense which some might find disconcerting, the story takes off so fast that any unease about style is momentary. Our viewpoint is through Nickie, age 14, an albino and a member of a logging family. We know tragedy has struck her family - her brother, Calvin, is in a coma. Author Meredy Maynard sets apart a paragraph at the end of the chapter that tosses us into Calvin's viewpoint. This technique intensifies our curiosity about the lives of these "real" people. Reading on, issues of logging old growth forests and environmentalists weave into Nickie's problems. Nickie struggles between loyalty to her logging community and standing up for what she personally thinks about the old trees. Some of the information the author conveys through Nickie weighs heavy on the teaching side, but the end is satisfying and fair. Although written for the young adult audience, this book will appeal to a broad range of ages. It would be a useful and thought-provoking tool when discussing the complex issues of old growth forests. -- From Independent Publisher
