About the Author:

Lorianne Siomades is an artist and graphic designer. She is the author and illustrator of Cuckoo Can't Find You, Kangaroo and Cricket, My Box of Color, and A Place to Bloom. She is also the illustrator of This Is the Ocean by Kersten Hamilton, and Where Wild Babies Sleep by Ann Purmell. She lives in Colorado.

PreSchool-Playful illustrations elaborate on the popular fingerplay. This itsy bitsy spider wears a blue T-shirt and red sneakers with orange socks, and has a thatch of yellow hair and a big, amiable smile as he goes off with flashlight and umbrella to begin his daredevil climb up the waterspout. Inevitably, he is washed out, but the opened umbrella turned upside-down gives him a perch from which he can be scooped up by a helpful butterfly that deposits him safely near his web. Of course, he's soon ready for another try, but this time he's much better prepared. The illustrations are done with watercolor, gouache, and cut paper in brilliant candy colors of purple, green, hot pink, and yellow, to create an attractive, uncluttered effect of intense color and simple shapes set off by white space. This book has plenty of toddler appeal, and would also be a good choice for a spider-themed preschool storytime.
