Ron Hirschi is the author of more than fifty books for young readers, including Searching for Grizzlies; When Night Comes; and When Morning Comes, all of which feature photographs by Thomas D. Mangelsen. Mr. Hirschi lives in Hadlock, Washington. From Booklist:
Reviewed with Ron Hirschi's When Morning Comes.
Ages 6-8. Spectacular color photographs and simple text introduce nature's beauty and wildlife behavior that is unique to day or night. As the sun rises, so do birds, deer, and bears; as water and rocks warm, cold-blooded creatures like lizards begin their days. Night follows morning with glorious sunset shots and a few facts describing the activities of nocturnal wildlife, including coyotes, raccoons, and otters. The simple, often poetic prose ("When the earth is drenched in the first rays of warm sun, and the last dark shadows of night disappear. . . ") is easy to follow, and the creatures pictured in the photos are identified by name. Diverse activities are presented, though the focus is on hunting and feeding habits. Afterwords clarify some general animal behavior. Used together, the books offer an eloquent ode to nature and many familiar inhabitants. Shelle Rosenfeld
