In an introduction to the joy of bouncing, a little girl bounces on her bed, on the sofa, and on Grandpa's knee, and a baby bounces in his crib and on his sister.

PreSchool-- The little girl and baby brother featured in Hughes's Bathwater's Hot (1985), Noisy (1985) , Colors (1986, all Lothrop) , etc. reappear in these titles. The concepts addressed here, however, are not those typically explored in nursery collections. In the first book, the girl demonstrates some of the ways and places she and her brother enjoy Bouncing : on beds, cushions, Grandpa's lap, even the couch "when Mom isn't looking." The second book presents the idea of giving in an understandable and delightful way. When the child gives her mother a birthday present, her mother responds with a kiss. Each day is filled with opportunities to give, whether it's a seat on the bus, a smile, or a hug. The success of these seemingly simple books is due to Hughes's ability to portray childhood concerns and behavior in a style that children recognize and appreciate. Her now characteristic illustrations, featuring vivacious cherubs, provide the same subtle humor and realistic charm found in her other books. The artwork is carried through to the endpapers, which depict the youngsters in a catalog of typical activities. The large picture book format makes these titles ideal for group sharing. Winning choices for all collections. --Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI
