A cruise into the world of boats introduces young enthusiasts to a range of vessels from lobster boats to ocean liners, describing what each one looks like, what it does, and what kinds of passengers and cargo it carries.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-K?Similar in format to McDonnell's excellent I Love Animals (Candlewick, 1994), her latest effort presents 11 types of boats in short, simple sentences: "I love the houseboat with a family on board"; "I love the dredger scooping up the mud." Some of the crafts may be unfamiliar to young listeners, but the illustrations clearly show how each one is used. The acrylic and gouache paintings are bright and attractive. Large, rollicking illustrations fill the pages, capturing the larger-than-life quality of the subjects. The water is always moving, never still; so is most of the crew aboard the various vessels (regrettably, people of color are not shown). The final scene ties the simple story together, revealing the narrator, a little girl in a bathtub full of toy boats, all of which readers have seen on the previous pages. An inventive and attractive treat for young boat enthusiasts.?Steven Engelfried, West Linn Public Library, OR

From Publishers Weekly:

Awash with color, this exuberant paean to all things afloat will shiver the timbers of young admirals everywhere. McDonnell (I Love Animals) assembles an impressive fleet; she shows boats for work, boats for play, boats for fishing and racing and hauling and even boats to live on. The oversize format gives free range to the sweeping acrylic and gouache illustrations, and McDonnell takes advantage of every inch, eschewing a paintbox palette for subtler, more sophisticated hues that pack a lot of visual punch. There's a bit of a surprise ending, too, as the busy flotilla finds safe harbor at last-in the bathtub. It's a perfect choice for getting little skippers in that bathtime frame of mind. Ages 3-up.
