Grandpa and Rosie spend the morning fishing and Rosie learns that catching a fish is not the most important thing

Kindergarten-Grade 2?Rosie rises at dawn and sets off on her bicycle to meet her grandfather to go fishing. The experience culminates in Grampa's composition of a poem celebrating their adventure. The text is low key and mostly gratifying, with the exception of occasional, disruptive italicized sentences that are apparently the girl's stream-of-consciousness comments. The tale is well supported by autumnal full-color illustrations. Full-page scenes are interspersed with well-composed double-page spreads and lively spot art, combining to convey the spirit of an early-morning expedition and a special relationship. This quiet treat joins the growing ranks of satisfying fishing stories, including N.L. Sharp's Today I'm Going Fishing With My Dad (Boyds Mills, 1993) and Catherine Stock's Armien's Fishing Trip (Morrow, 1990). A fine choice for story time or independent reading.?Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA

Ages 4-7. Soft-edged yet vibrant full-page paintings, bright with autumn colors, alternate with smaller pictures washed in pastels to capture the loving relationship between a little girl and her grandfather. The art is a good match for Hest's simple, appealing, very childlike story, which follows Rosie as she braves early morning shadows on her bike to rendezvous with Grampa at a favorite fishing spot in the park. While the pair wait for a bite, Rosie urges Grampa to make up a poem: "A poem about me is a good idea." The lively rhyme he comes up with is a delightful finale that replays the happenings of a memorable day: "A splish / A splash / So-long, swim away / Sweet baby fish, / it's your lucky day!" Tender and warm, this will be great for lap sharing. Stephanie Zvirin
