STEEL TOE BOOTS--POEMS THAT PACK A PUNCH
These poems record David Lawrence's time spent in prison, and are valuable because of their honest emotional strength. They are powerful, with no holds barred. And the poems are not about the routines of prison life so much as they are about the emotional life of prisoners: the feelings of the men, and especially the feelings of the poet himself.
Not surprisingly, there is bitterness in Steel Toe Boots, and cynicism with regard to the system and those in control of it. But the collection also comes to life with irony, and there is humor to match the sadness.
There is a great deal of compassion in these poems, especially for fellow inmates, but there is anger directed at some of them as well. There is a poignant obsession with his wife on the outside, and a complex developing attitude toward love and lust. Before finishing Steel Toe Boots, the reader realizes this is a book about relationships--even if the setting is a lonely place.
"Steel Toe Boots is a unique and powerful book. The poems are bitter, funny, fierce, lucid, and deeply human. David Lawrence is the genuine article." --Thomas Lux, Poet, Sarah Lawrence College
"David Lawrence turns prison bars sideways into five-line staffs and types his remarkable songs 'that sing on their paper:' defiant, intimate, startling and provocative. These poems deliver a knockout punch to the American prison system." --Chiz Schultz, motion picture and television producerAbout the Author:
