Adrian Luchini's primary program is the persistent attempt to create space out of expressive and almost physically gestural lines that are clearly the lines of a freehand draftsman. Again and again in his drawings and built work, a nervous or taut bundle of individual lines coalesces into spatial figures and conjures spaces with ephemeral boundaries simultaneously from air and in air. One has the sense that Luchini attempt to draw in space and to create space by the physical act of drawing. Lines-and the planes that result from the three-dimensional projection of lines-are folded into and onto themselves in order to invent space and to promise more space.-From the Introduction by Lauren Kogod

Born in Argentina, Adrian Luchini received degrees in Architecture and Planning from the Universidad Catolica de Cordoba (Dipl.Arch.), University of Cincinnati (M.S.Arch.), and Harvard University (M.Arch.). He was founding partner of Denison Luchini Architects (1985-1991), and Schwetye Luchini Architects (1991-1994), Senior Designer at HOK (1994-1996), and is currently Directory of Architectural Design at Sverdrup Facilities, Inc. Since 1985 he has taught at Washington University in St. Louis.
As a practitioner, he is fundamentally interested in the ethereal; as an educator, in the way practice of architecture influences the development of new theories. In this regard his pursuit of architecture is by necessity expanded, general, imprecise, and all-encompassing. His mode of resistance is through engagement instead of withdrawal, evidenced by the severe oscillation from the small practice-boutique firm, to the large, multifaceted corporation for architecture, engineering and construction; from the carefully delayed, guarded residential project to the (almost) anonymous, shared, automatic medium of global practice.
Oscar Riera Ojeda is an editor and designer who practices in the United States, South America, and Europe from his office in Boston. Originally from Buenos Aires, he is vice-director of the Spanish-Argentinian magazine Casas Internacional and is the creator of several series of architectural publications for Rockport Publishers in addition to the Contemporary World Architects series including Ten Houses, single Building, Architecture in Detail, and Art and Architecture. Other architectural publications include the New American Series for the Whitney Library of Design, as well as several monographs on the work of renowned architects.
