Grade 7 Up. This title offers intriguing discussion in a format that is ideally suited to honing students' critical reading and thinking skills. Viewpoints expressed include whether juvenile crime is on the increase; causes and contributing factors; the role of gangs; and ways to combat the problem. Each section begins with a well-written introduction that lays out the issues, and each argument begins with a synopsis, the author's credentials, and some questions to consider while reading and ends with a list of recent articles from the popular press. Cartoons, graphs, quotes, and charts are sprinkled throughout. The volume concludes with an annotated list of organizations to contact. Primarily intended for research and debate, this is a thought-provoking book that serves as a model for presenting primary-source material in a way that encourages young people to think for themselves and to respect the opinions of others.?Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME

Gr. 6^-12. In this book, as in the other titles in the excellent Opposing Viewpoints series, the editors gather material from diverse sources, including popular magazines, university press books, and children's nonfiction. Here, meaty excerpts concerned with crime committed by juveniles, usually three to six pages, are grouped by topic (for example, "Are Juvenile Crime and Violence Increasing?"), with different sides of each controversy treated, just as the series title implies. The editors also provide thoughtful, provocative introductions with questions for teens to ask themselves and extensive chapter lists of periodical resources to consult. The examples of the crimes are horrifying but never exploitatively presented. A fine choice for any library used by young adults, made even better by the inclusion of a list of organizations and a thorough bibliography. Susan Dove Lempke
