Both books include the text of the First Amendment and questions at the beginning of each chapter for students to ponder as they read the different viewpoints. These volumes will be useful for developing the critical-thinking skills necessary to argue points related to these complex issues. Gr. 6-12. As clearly illustrated by these impassioned essays, few topics invite controversy and polarize views like censorship. Fortunately, this Opposing Viewpoints title goes beyond both the conservative (society is an immoral pit) and the liberal (to suggest there's a problem is threatening) perspective. Of course, some essays veer in those directions, but, for example, of the six essays discussing Internet access to pornography, most present multifaceted arguments with usually credible support from multiple sources. The chapter on the arts will be useful to students researching in fine arts electives; the section on free speech includes two interesting essays addressing flag desecration (statistics already need updating); and there are several essays that will be of value to schools wanting to help students identify hate speech or investigating whether to develop campus speech codes.
