Grade 1-4-- Holt Collier was chosen as a guide for Theodore Roosevelt's hunting trip; Roosevelt ended up not shooting a tired old bear. That refusal, made famous in cartoons, is believed to have inspired the creation of "Teddy" bears. This brief account weaves known events with imagined dialogue and description. It abbreviates earlier biographies of both men, but emphasizes their mutual love of the outdoors. Collier is portrayed respectfully in both text and art, and he emerges as committed to fair play as Roosevelt. However, neither of these characters leaps off the page due to language that is simplistic and unnatural and full-color illustrations that are attractive but posed. The names of the well-known members of the hunting party are included, which may be of regional or adult interest, but seem superfluous in light of information omitted. Readers are not grounded historically until the epilogue; there is only a vague time reference. They learn that Collier fought in the Civil War (but not that he was a Confederate) and that his parents were slaves (but never whether he was one). And in the short leap from hunting trip to Teddy bear there is no indication of other claims to its invention. None of the standard biographical sources even mention Collier. It's too bad, in the interest of more inclusive treatments of American history (and myth), that this one fails. --Nancy Palmer, The Little School, Bellevue, WA
