Reviews

Gr. 4-7. This book is for a slightly older audience than previous entries in the Come Look with Me series. Its subtitle, "Discovering Photographs with Children," is particularly meaningful: all the photographs included are of children, and the text is designed to help adults talk with young people about what photos reveal. The majority of the pictures are twentieth-century shots with a contemporary feel; some are color, but most are black-and-white. Although a few images will be familiar to children (Eisenstaedt's Drum Major and Children, for example), most will not. Accompanying each picture is a page of text pointing out interesting design and thematic points in an open-ended way that allows for discussion. The book can be used nicely with small groups of students who can gather around the image and talk about it. Tucker's tone bespeaks true curiosity, not condescension. Mary Harris Veeder
