A new collection of tough and timely monolog pairs with opposing views on many topics. These monologs are superb for acting exercises, auditions, and speech contests. Each monolog characterization focuses on a topic of interest to young people today. The monolog book is divided into three sections: who we are, who we were, and who we prented to be. For each topic, the monologs are paired to allow the presentation of two differing opinions. The two-minute length of most of these monologs makes memorization easy. Suitable for classroom or performance activities.

About the Author:

Heather Henderson caught the theater bug at an early age but never got to say a line on-stage until she was a senior in high school. She performed in many ballets (where you're not allowed to talk) and then, in her first high school production, Heather was cast as a deaf/mute character! It was not until West Side Story that she was able to utter the very memorable line, "Ooh, oobley, ooh" as Riff's girlfriend, Velma. After high school, Heather attended Florida State University (and again, she didn't get to say any lines in The Merry Widow) where she decided to become a teacher. Teachers get to say lots of lines! Following graduation, Heather taught drama for four years at Galaxy Middle School in Deltona, Florida, teaching students to say all the lines she was never able to. She currently teaches seventh grade Language Arts at Galaxy.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 6-Up Henderson's second collection is well balanced and diverse, and young adults searching for an audition piece are sure to find something that suits them. The author is adept at examining both sides of a wide variety of situations. For example, "S Is for Special" explores what it's like to have a disabled sibling, while "Handicapable" is told from the point of view of a person with CP. "Johnny Reb" and "Billy Yank" relate opposite experiences of the Civil War. There are subjects slight and serious, contemporary and historical, so that the gamut of human emotions is represented. In addition to dramatic exercises, this volume could also be used in the context of debating or journal writing. A useful addition for both school and general collections. -Ronni Krasnow, New York Public Library
