In the wilds of Northern Pakistan, where glaciers are born of mating ice, two young lovers shatter the tenuous peace of a nomadic community

Thinner than Skin is a riveting novel about identity and belonging. It's also a love story: between a young Pakistani man trying to make his way as photographer in America, and the daughter of a Pakistani father and German mother brought up in the US, who wants to return to a country she's never seen. Together they make the trip to Pakistan, where a chance meeting with a young nomad changes their lives, and the lives of those around them, forever. The novel is also a love letter to the wilds of Northern Pakistan, to glaciers, to the old Silk Road, and to the nomadic life of the indigenous people in the Northern territories, where China encroaches and Pakistanis, Uzbeks, Russians, Chinese, and Afghans all come together to trade.

About the Author:

Uzma Aslam Khan is the author of Trespassing and The Geometry of God, both highly acclaimed novels, published around the world. Uzma's story "Ice, Mating" was included in Granta magazine's hugely popular edition on Pakistan. She is the winner of the Bronze Award in the Independent Publishers Book Award, and her previous novel was a Kirkus Best Book of 2009 and a finalist for Foreword Magazine's Best Books of 2009.

Review:

"In gorgeous prose, Khan writes about Pakistan, a land of breathtaking beauty, and the complex relationships between people who are weighted with grief and estrangement. As her characters' lives play out against the backdrop of the external world whose violence gradually closes in on them, Khan brilliantly probes the fatal limitations of human understanding. A novel of great lucidity and tenderness, filled with splendid descriptions of the land, the people who have always inhabited it, and those who are irresistibly drawn to it."
--Therese Soukar Chehade

"Smart, fierce, and poignant: perhaps the most exciting novel yet by this very talented writer."
--

-Mohsin Hamid

A story of love and identity, Uzma Aslam Khan s Thinner than Skin is set among the magnificent landscape of glaciers, mountains, rivers and valleys in northern Pakistan...The novel delves into the emotions of grief and love as lives are unravelled without warning and individuals shaped by their environment. Khan navigates through the mountainous terrain (geographically and sensually) with the expertise of a seasoned adventurer she is known not to stay away from fearlessly probing into relationships and what silently lingers within the private realm. Dawn, Pakistan
'Here in the West we don't receive many English-language novels by Pakistani women authors, so when we do we should pay attention... Thinner Than Skin has elements of quest, thriller, love story and legend, with unconventional characters.' The Star, Toronto
Thinner than Skin is a story of lovers, exiles, dreamers, wanderers, set flush with a backdrop that s as mythic as it is spectacular: Pakistan s Kaghan Valley, the Karakoram and Pamir Mountains, forests of deodar and pine watched by owls, rivers and lakes born of mating of glaciers and violence of wind-blown rumour... A consuming read, Skin is mesmeric if you yield to the geography that animates it, revealing characters from whom you go away, closer. The Hindu
In taut prose filled with promise and foreboding, Khan transports the reader to Northern Pakistan near the Chinese border... She displays the natural beauty and stark, sometimes threatening, conditions in this area from the perspective of those who live there and those who are just visiting...Thinner than Skin is a fascinating introduction to the real life and culture of people in areas usually described only in stereotypical jargon. Jordan Times
A virtuoso performance. --India Today

The French Embassy has awarded Fiction Prize to Pakistani writer Uzma Aslam Khan for her book Thinner Than Skin.

French Ambassador Philippe Thiébaud awarded the prize to Uzma during the fifth edition of the Karachi Literature Festival. The jury comprised three members from among professors, writers and literary journalists from Pakistan.

In a joint statement, the jury explained its choice for Uzma Aslam Khan s book. The eloquent and elegant way in which she reveals a myriad of different worlds with masterly restraint. The novel animates mountains, lakes, wind and fire and other elements of nature that echo the complex emotions of her characters. Through the carefully structured plot and the well wrought patterns of recurring images and incidents, emerge insights about homeland, belonging and dislocation, central to contemporary Pakistani life, the statement said.

The book is Uzma s fourth novel which deals with the author s favourite themes: nostalgia of the homeland for young overseas Pakistanis, war against terror, social values of the homeland and women s condition.

This is the first edition of the French Embassy Fiction Prize. Its objective is to promote Pakistani literature, particularly fiction writers. The books competing for the first edition of the prize were English language fiction novels written by Pakistani authors. --Daily Times February 2014
