Like the widely praised 100 Essential Modern Poems, this accessible volume is filled with wisdom and insights that will delight, engage, and inspire readers of any gender, age, or interests.
Selected by Joseph Parisi, former longtime editor of Poetry magazine, with publishing executive Kathleen Welton, the collection features such acclaimed poets as Emily Dickinson, Lucille Clifton, Rita Dove, Jane Kenyon, Maxine Kumin, Audre Lorde, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Marianne Moore, Mary Oliver, Dorothy Parker, Linda Pastan, Marge Piercy, Sylvia Plath, Kay Ryan, Anne Sexton, and May Swenson. But the book also turns attention once again to many fine but forgotten women poets, and includes several contemporary poets whose talents and unique points of view will surprise, stimulate, and amuse readers meeting them for the first time.
Courage and endurance, life and death, faith and hope, and the continuing search for meaning in modern life, as well as love, marriage, family dynamics, and nature are favorite subjects. Mr. Parisi introduces each poet with a concise and enlightening biographical sketch, and provides clear commentary on the favorite subjects and particular elements of style in the selection of the author's poems.
