Grade 3-6?These really are just the first facts about 42 famous Americans. Each figure gets one full-page photograph or painting, nicely reproduced, and one page of text. In limited space, readers get a fairly intriguing and enthusiastic introduction, learning why the person is noteworthy, along with a bit of historical context. Two to five paragraphs offer quick highlights of the person's career and a few additional points of interest. Nearly half of the people represented are women or minorities. Many ubiquitous names are not included, leaving room for lesser-knowns like Mother Jones and Jim Beckwourth. Chapters are divided into seven chronological eras, each of which begins with a narrative overview and a timeline featuring the individuals covered in that section. Another timeline appears above the text in each of the entries; it runs from 1600 to 2000 and includes just 12 events, 10 of them wars. This book is similar in scope to Jean Marzollo's My First Book of Biographies (Scholastic, 1994) in its brief and lively, but sometimes superficial, coverage. Suzanne LeVert's The Doubleday Book of Famous Americans (Doubleday, 1989; o.p.) covers more than twice the number of people, including 18 of the 42 included here, with slightly more information on each.
