Review:

"...A solid 608-page reference designed to be thoroughly 'user friendly' for young readers of all ages, and enhanced with simple yet bright coloring to offset many of its charts and graphs, the New View Almanac is excellent and highly recommended for both school and community libraries as a superbly organized and comprehensive reference offering a wealth of information..."
-- Children's Bookwatch (January 2003) (UNKNOWN 20030101)

"This volume will be popular with visually oriented teens and might be a good hook for reluctant readers and reluctant researchers. It is well worth examining for its outstanding chart making and graphic design features. Most of the charts photocopy well and can readily be used to illustrate homework assignments. It is a recommended purchase for school, public library, and home collections as a supplement to more inclusive but less visually exciting statistical reference works."
--VOYA (April 2004) (VOYA 20040401)

"...will be popular with young students who will welcome the attractive, easy-to-understand graphics and who are not concerned about source details."
--ARBA (2004) (ARBA 20040224)

"Now in an updated and expanded third edition, New View Almanac is an impressive and user friendly resource of facts about the world we live in, supplemented with over 2,000 charts, graphs, and maps... a welcome addition to school, community, and homeschooling library reference collections."
-- Children's Bookwatch (August 2003) (Children's Bookwatch 20030801)

"This primarily visual almanac imitates computer graphics in its approach to conveying statistical data across a broad range of hot topics. Current data from governments, learned societies, and journal publications are selected, condensed, and converted to over 2,000 eye-catching color and black-and-white charts, tables, maps, and graphs...It successfully conveys trends in topical subjects and should prove popular with visually oriented secondary school and undergraduate markets."
-- Library Journal (December 2001) (Library Journal 20011201)

"You need this book. Buy it!"
-- Fort Worth I.S.D. (December 2001) (UNKNOWN 20011201)

"The more than 2,000 charts and graphs are attractive and well-designed...Both the black-and-white and color illustrations have strong enough contrast that they will photocopy well...This book can provide the illustrations teachers like in homework assignments...It could be very useful in a children's department serving upper elementary and middle school students."
-- Booklist (December 2001) (Booklist 20011201)

"A stunning number of facts have been packed into this sprawling visual companion to The Statistical Abstract of the United States and its counterparts. Consisting entirely of sourced graphics and pie charts, many in color, grouped into 12 general areas from Environment and Geography to Lifestyles and Pastimes, the New View Almanac will be eminently useful as an alternative way of finding information. It's also a great source of copiable illustrations for report-writers on topics as common as drug abuse or teen pregnancy, as thoughtful as the national distribution of endangered species, and as quirky as American shopping habits."
-- The School Library Journal (December 2001) (School Library Journal 20011201)

From Booklist:

"Attractive, accessible, and authoritative, its highly visual format makes all the other dull and confusing almanacs obsolete," says the press release that came with this book. This is an overstatement, for while the graphics do illustrate statistical data, there are no numbers to back up the charts. It will still be necessary to "sift . . . through cramped columns and tiny numbers" if this is to be anything more than a source of pictures to illustrate homework.

There is no bibliography. Graphs and charts list a source, but never more than the name of an organization or government agency (U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Department of Agriculture), without a date. The book is divided into 12 sections, each with a short introductory essay and a sidebar of fast facts. Within the sections are brief essays and more fact sidebars--reminiscent of USA Today. The more than 2,000 charts and graphs are attractive and well-designed. Topics covered range from the number of prime-time TV viewers in the U.S. per night to the top-10 PAC spenders, Amtrak operating expenditures, and how users learn about Web sites. Both the black-and-white and color illustrations have strong enough contrast to photocopy well. In conjunction with other reference materials, this book can provide the illustrations teachers like in homework assignments.

An optional purchase for an adult collection, where it would be more suitable as a browsing tool than as a reference source, this almanac could be useful in a children's department serving upper-elementary and middle-school students.
