Grade 7-10–This pedestrian biography opens by recounting Jefferson's many accomplishments and contributions to this country's early history and anointing him the "intellectual leader of the American Revolution." What follows is a chronological account of Jefferson's life from his privileged Virginia birth to his death on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the writing of which, this book firmly supports, was his greatest achievement. Nardo writes capably and often references quotes and primary sources, all of which are duly cited. The frequent illustrations are well reproduced in full color and are accompanied by occasional quick facts placed in the generous margins and relevant sidebars. The focus is almost exclusively on Jefferson's political life with only slight mention of his wife and family and certainly no attention given to Sally Hemings. Basically, any personal elements that might present him as a three-dimensional figure and provide a human connection to young researchers are completely neglected.
