Review:

"Readers will come away with a vivid picture of the person and a clear understanding of what made these individuals true hmanitarians, as well as charismatic world leaders. They may even inspire the next generation to a more significant method of leadership - that of leading by example. Recommended."
--Library Media Connection (August/September 2004) (Library Media Connection 20040901)

"Pogrund is an award-winning journalist who reported from the front lines of the anti-apartheid movement, and his eloquent account roots the immediacy of the Mandela drama in a clear historical overview, showing that 'apartheid dates back to the 17th century.' There is no documentation beyond an occasional citation for a quote, but this is still one of the best biographies of Mandela for the age group...Both books have a readable design, with a detailed glossary, a time lie, and quotes and small color photos on nearly every page."
-- Booklist (Febraury 2003) (Booklist 20030201)

"Middle grade and lower-level high school readers will find these books good introductions to these important world leaders."
--School Library Journal (May 2004) (School Library Journal 20040501)

From Booklist:

Reviewed with Schloredt's Martin Luther King Jr.

Gr. 5-10. Part of the World Peacemakers series, these illustrated biographies combine each leader's personal story with the history of his people and the political struggle that changed his country forever. Pogrund is an award-winning journalist who reported from the front lines of the anti-apartheid movement, and his eloquent account roots the immediacy of the Mandela drama in a clear historical overview, showing that "apartheid dates back to the 17th century." There is no documentation beyond an occasional citation for a quote, but this is still one of the best biographies of Mandela for the age group. The book about King isn't an essential purchase, especially given the many biographies available. What's most valuable is the detailed history of events and people--though Rosa Parks is misrepresented as a little weary seamstress instead of the political activist she was. Both books have a readable design, with a detailed glossary, a time line, and quotes and small color photos on nearly every page. But what about sources? Not even a bibliography? Hazel Rochman
