Gr. 3-5. Abandoned by the side of the road to fend for himself, a little black-and-tan hound dog is taken in by Farmer John and his family. He proves his worth time and again, saving two sisters from a bull and accomplishing the act that gets him his name. Basically a family story, this has many of the qualities of good family history. When the voice is one of reminiscence, the story is successful; it's less successful when it anthropomorphizes the animals by giving them human thoughts and names like Roy Raccoon, Chrissy Cottontail, and Sammy Skunk. Old-fashioned color illustrations have the same nostalgic feel as the text and will appeal to an audience looking for wholesome transitional material. Janice Del Negro
