Detlev H. (Herb) Smaltz, Ph.D., FACHE, FHIMSS, CKM, is the CIO at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to his appointment at OSU, Dr. Smaltz was the first-ever chief knowledge officer for the Air Force Medical Service, a $6.2 billion globally distributed integrated delivery system. He has 19 years of experience in senior IT positions, including serving as a CIO for a 20-bed community hospital, a 301-bed academic medical center, a 5-state region, and a 7-country international region. Eta S. Berner, Ed.D., FACMI, FHMISS, is professor of health services administration in the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She teaches in the master of science in health informatics program and has been at the forefront of research in the areas of the use of IT for patient safety.
