The author, an amputee, recounts his life and how he came to found the Achilles Track Club, an international organization for runners with disabilities

In 1965 Richard Traum was pinned by a car and had to have his right leg amputated. In 1972 he started running with an artificial limb, and by 1982 he had founded the Achilles Track Club. Ten years later, 148 members of the by then international club ran the New York City Marathon. In telling the stories of these runners that have MS, cerebral palsy, sight loss angina, amputated limbs, arthritis, and other disabilities, Traum often repeats his theory, "I'm convinced that running can do more for the disabled than modern medicine yet knows." Traum's story will also be featured in a TV movie on ABC planned for November. Denise Perry Donavin
