Text: English, SpanishFrom School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3?A beautifully simple bilingual (Spanish and English) book revolving around the concept of warmth, calor. Crystal-clear sentences such as "My grandfather used to say that the warmth of the sun is the blanket of the poor" express some of the intimate feelings the narrator has for her family and culture. On each page, the Spanish appears on top in bold type, with the English below it. Both are used aptly by the author, who does not translate literally but captures the same intensity of feeling in both languages. Pe?a's illustrations depict scenes from the Southwest in earthy ocres, reds, oranges, and blues. His landscapes and interiors distinctly identify the setting by depicting adobe pueblos, clay figures of storytellers, pottery, weavings, Kachina dolls, and cow skulls. His characters' faces seem to be chiseled out of the earth itself and worn smooth by the ages. However, each painting appears to have been created separately and, although carefully chosen, the pictures don't work with the text to achieve a unity of purpose in telling the story. Also, they are most appropriate for older readers, who won't be interested in the simple narrative.?Graciela Italiano, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
