9781568024516: United States Presidential Primary Elections 1968-1996: A Handbook of Election Statistics

My how the presidential primary system, which came into existence in 1912, has changed over the past 30 years. In 1968, there were 15 US presidential primaries spread from March to June, with the eventual winner of the Democratic nomination (Hubert Humphrey) not officially entered in any. In 1996, 42 primaries were held mostly in February and March, with the major party candidates entered in nearly every one. A CQ senior writer from 1975-97 has compiled the only one-volume record of every vote cast in these races, organizing the data by state and county breakdowns, framed by a brief history, vote summaries, trend analyses, tables, and maps.
